George III Scrolled Paper Bottle or Wine Coaster

$0.00

The reappearance of another old friend. I had sold this about thirty yeas ago & welcome it home once again.

The coaster is wood, the interior is lined with red morocco & the outer sides are inset with mica chips (small losses) with the scrollwork decoration applied, and set between marquetry bands, upper and lower.

This coaster is a typical example of scroll-work, sometimes also called 'quill work'. Narrow strips of parchment, sometimes vellum and even paper are rolled into spirals and scrolls and edge glued to a flat surface. The exposed edges, as in this example, are frequently gilt and thus resemble gilt metal filigree work. This type of work was popular after the restoration in 1660 to the early 18th-century, and then again in the latter part of the century.
