An exceptional George II mahogany straight tube barometer by Batty Storr, York.  The case with scroll pediment boldly and crisply carved with egg and dart moulded edge centering a carved swag of flowers and above the silvered register plates flanking the exposed tube, bearing the weather indications on the left panel engraved with the maker’s name, B. Storr / York / fecit at the base, and the pressure scale the right panel. The mahogany case enriched with a rope-twist carved edge; the cistern cover profusely and well-carved with icicle, egg and dart and floral motifs.

The Storr family was a famous clock making family, mostly Quakers who originated from Ostwick in East Riding then moving to Summercroft, Selby and later to York.  Marmaduke Storr was born in 1667 his youngest son from several children was Batty born 1710, died 1793.
